Although Monday, May 25 was a national holiday, it was of a more intimate affair for some of my family. It wasn’t a day in which we just remembered those who’d given time to their country by way of military service, but we ventured to remember all the dead, that is of this particular branch of my family.

I picked up my parents, Charlie and Florine Baldwin at their home in Slate Mills, then my grandparents, Clyde and Lillie Pullen of Old Hollow. My sisters, Connie Smoot and Rebecca Burke and their husbands and children rendezvoused with us at our grandparents. From there we went up Old Hollow then on up the road to the top of Pickeral Ridge to the old Romie Pullen place. Mr. David Albee, the current owner of the place where my great-grandfather once lived has given permission to keep the cemetery clean. In times past when some of the older generations were alive this was done rather frequently but now with the lack of interest and perhaps with lack of knowledge, usually once or twice a year is the limit on the cemetery’s maintenance. Having previously decided on a date, I also kept a promise to take a granddad along.
