Rappahannock News Staff Photo/Jan LaValley BEAR FACTS: Gerry Blank, a research biologist assistant/trapping specialist with the wildlife division of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, with a bear trapped in a culvert trap at Sunset Hills Farm. Blank has been trapping bears for 18 years with the department. He moved about 97 bears last year but normally moves about 50-70 per year. Blank had two other bears in traps — one taken off the Fodderstack Road and the other in Madison — which he and his assistant, Rick Nelson, were taking to the wildlife research division office in Harrisonburg. There they tag the bears, tatoo them and check them out before releasing them in the Allegheny Mt. range.
