or most of the year, stallion programs make up a significant amount of the ERC’s business. Stallions are brought to the facility for “phantom” training, where the animal is taught to mount an artificial mare. When the stallion attempts to breed the pseudo mare, his semen is collected and used later to artificially inseminate a real mare, either on site or at another farm.
Artificial insemination, or AI, is used when the two breeding animals are geographically separated, or when they are so dissimilar in size that natural breeding would be difficult. AI “cover,” as it’s called, also allows a very popular stallion to be bred to more mares because the ejaculate can be divided into many smaller doses and still result in pregnancy.
The ERC collects semen from stallions, conducts tests to determine its potency, and provides ultra-low temperature facilities for the doses, or “straws,” to be stored in. \\Tien needed, Dippert arranges for straws of frozen or cooled semen to be shipped anywhere around the country. The facility also stands stallions at stud and provides corrective behavioral training for horses that are hard to handle during breeding.
