Friday dawned clear and sunny and the temperature soared to around 90 degrees. It was a perfect day for playing outside and that is exactly what about 700 kids were doing at Rappahannock Elementary School in addition to enjoyirig many other activities as well. It was DARE Day ‘98 at RCES — a day-long, fun-filled, informational panorama of events.
One of the more popular items on the agenda Friday — at least as far as the kids were concerned — was the fire hose activity. The kids all stood in a line and one of the members of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department would “hose them down” (not at full strength of course). “Dusty” the dog really got the line going when he jumped in and had a ball splashing around. Dusty is part of an act, Doodlebug and Dusty of Rainbow Clowns from Front Royal. Doodlebug said Dusty really loves the water but be careful when he comes out and sure enough, he did some spraying of his own when he emerged from the hose.
Many children enjoyed the petting zoo provided by Dixie Meadows Simmental of Viewtown. They had everything from doves to camels for the kids to get close to.
Kevin Owens, of Enchanting Illusions (also out of Front Royal), mesmerized the crowd with his magic act.
