Woodard, whose middle name is Faith, wanted a cottage business where she could be home for her young son, so at 26 years of age she started her business on Memorial Day weekend, 1977. She and Martin were married two weeks later. That same year The Inn at Little Washington opened and she frequently sold them sorrel, chives and other herbs.
In 1980 Woodard took a big step by publishing a catalog. “We felt like we didn’t have a lot to lose and were young enough to think everything would work out.” A graphic designer, Karen Becker, designed the catalog that included herbs and spices. They printed about 1,000 copies of the 24-page catalog on a copy machine.
In 1984 came another defining event in the history of the business. Martin Woodard quit his contracting business to join Faith Mountain, and they made the decision to incorporate and added color to the catalog.
