Fires are labor

intensive

Most people are not aware how labor intensive fighting a fire can be. Carter says it takes at least 16 people to put out a fire. That is why fire departments have to rely on each other. Carter says, “I don’t think there’s one department that can turn out 16 people.” During the day is the most difficult time to get staff. But most fires occur at night and in the early morning.

The fire departments are also looking to recruit members for administrative tasks, fundraising, bookkeeping and people with computer skills who can help develop web sites! The average volunteer only has to work a couple hours a week.

Currently, sixteen people from all over the county are taking classes to get a Virginia State Certification for firefighters. The class finishes in January. Once finished, the participants will have completed 250 hours of training
