was only stunned and became airborne quickly. Yet, it was with uncertain and wobbly flight that the bird disappeared among the trees over the garage.
Many — I should say most — birds are not so lucky and lie on the ground until they either die or are pounced on by a cat. Rarely do they survive. Almost weekly, I encounter a reader who has had the experience of a bird colliding with a window.
If the bird is not killed by the collision, there are steps that may save the bird’s life: pick up a brown paper bag, rush out, and pick up the bird and place it in the bag. Fold over the top of the bag, secure it with a bulldog clip or clothes pin, punch a few small holes in the bag for air, and place bird-in-bag in a quiet, warm place.
If the bird is not too seriously injured, it will recover in the warm darkness of the bag after a short time. The rescuer will eventually hear a scrabbling in the bag, signaling recovery.
If this does not happen after an hour or so, take the bag outside and carefully open the top and peer in. The bird may well be peering up at you. He or she is ready for release.
If the bird is not dead and lying on its side, but still seems alive, fasten the bag closed again and wait for another hour. Recovery time depends on the species of bird and the force with which it has encountered glass.
In all this, handle the bird as little as possible. What has often happened — if the bird has not been killed — is the bird is conscious but unable to move. This is something like a nightmare, when one wants to move and can’t. If the bird — conscious but unable to fly — is handled too much, the heart beats so rapidly from fear that the vessels in the brain rupture, killing the bird.
