Children (regardless of age) must take advantage of the budding Hearthstone school talent that will be evident at The Castleton Theater this month.
On Saturday, Dec. 11 at 4 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. the Hearthstone players will perform an adaptation of the Erich Kastner novel “Emil and the Detectives.”
The original and often filmed story (by Disney in 1964, for one) concerns young Emil who, en route to visit relatives, loses his money to a penny-ante thief. Emil enlists the aid of a group of kids who imagine themselves ace detectives, but the junior gumshoes get in real deep when it turns out that the thief is part of a criminal gang planning a big heist.
“Emil and the Detectives” was adapted by Dietlinde Maazel from the original Kastner novel (both the German and translated editions) as a “sketch” piece for the school’s drama class. The drama class is taught by Mrs. Maazel, an award-winning actress, and by Sharon Wyrrick, a similarly-honored choreographer, director, performer and educator. Hearthstone’s “Emil” will be performed by a mostly lower school troupe (7 to 11 yearolds), and will be the result of a few short weeks of intensive rehearsal.
On Friday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m, The Castleton Theater will be the scene of yet another Hearthstone event, The Hearthstone Christmas Concert. The Christmas Concert will feature the school’s choir performing a medley of Christmas, Chanukah and popular (traditional) songs from Europe, a selection of solos and duos performed on the piano, cello and yiolin, and a classical ballet
