When a relative has died in a far off city, many airlines offer compassion or bereavement fares. While these fares may not be lower than a special sale fare, they are typically half of what one would pay for a last-minute, unrestricted ticket - with an open ended return. Aside from price, the biggest benefit of a bereavement ticket is that it provides a round trip rate, even though the bereaved traveler can return whenever he or she wants. This precludes the expensive necessity of having to purchase one-way tickets to and from a destination. Those seeking compassion fares can expect the airlines to ask them what their relation was to the deceased, as well as verification from the funeral home.
