from our house up to grandma’s to wash clothes and things like that. A distance of about a mile and a half each way. I have a letter she wrote to grandma with details of what was going on in our house, how well I was doing in school, and that she was “cracking” walnuts.

I remember the preacher, being there to see her when she was really bad. The preacher was Elder Harvey Daily from Sperryville. He was pastor of Thornton Gap Old School Baptist Church in Old Hollow, where my grandma and granddaddy had joined in 1957.

I remember the funeral home and all the creepy quietness. I remember seeing grandma in that grey casket" with the stark white lining. I remember my dad asking me if I wanted to touch her, which I didn’t, and regretted ever . since. I remember feeling so lonely, and what an absence that was! So, I swore that I would always touch the dead should I feel that same lonely feeling again. Grandma was only fifty-three years old when she died.

After about thirty-five years I had a dream of my grandma. I had dreamed we were at the old place again,, lots of people were there. I saw her sitting in a split-bottorp chair in the kitchen near the back door, telling everyone she had to go away. She told me to Come there and sit down in front of her. Then I remember her gently stroking the top of my head and saying everything would be alright.

I ask then, dear reader, how could one such as she be forgotten? Lord, help me keep my memories of her, that I might try to pass on to each generation of her descendants the noble, gentle soul she was.
