Dozens of volunteers will collect
hundreds of bags of trash.
According to the Virginia Department of
Transportation every year, Virginia’s Adopt-aHighway
volunteers collect about 300,000 bags of trash from one-fourth of the 56,000 miles of roads in the state. That projects to over a million bags, or a quarter-million cubic yards of trash on all Virginia roads. Fortunately, many of the 40,000 or so Adopt-AHighway volunteers will be hauling away a large share of it on April 22 for the annual statewide spring cleanup.
According to VDOT Virginia has one of the country’s largest Adopt-A Highway programs with nearly 6,400 adoptions that account for more than 14,300 miles, or roughly 26 percent, of its state-maintained highways.
The Warrenton Residency, which serves Rappahannock County reports 20 percent or 54 miles of the state-maintained county roads are currently adopted.
On April 22, highway rights-of-way will be filled with community volunteers in orange safety vests for the beautification and clean-up effort sponsored by VDOT.
In addition, spring cleanup will also be held at the Rappahannock Park on April 22. All county residents, fHends, visitors, absentee landowners, guests, etc. are invited to help participate in a cleanup and pot-luck picnic at the county park, located on U.S. 211 just outside of Washington.
Participants are encouraged to bring work/play clothes and casually enjoy our wonderful facility while cleaning up along the banks of the Rush River and the trails and woods leading down to it. Tentative schedule at this point is 1 p.m. until dark.
We encourage all county residents to participate in some fashion and if your business or organization is part of the Adopt-a-Highway program, make sure to be out picking up trash on April 22.
