issue of a dress code for the schools, and said that she would like to see some research done on dress code requirements in other area school districts. She noted her concern with bare midriffs and exposed piercings, too short shorts and skirts, and the external display of underclothes. StonewallHawthorne representative Franklin Warner was enthusiastic in his support for the investigation, and Piedmont member Aline Johnson also voiced her agreement for consideration of a dress code.
Mastery learning
Middle School Associate Principal Richard Smith presented a discussion of mastery learning and its use in the schools. Basic to the concept of mastery learning, he said, is “success for all students.” He noted that the teaching paradigm had changed from the past where time was the constant and student achievement was the variable to the present, where achievement is the constant and time is the variable. This paradigm change, he said, led to an instructional approach that “leads to success for all students.” Mastery learning involves a process of identifying and stating clear objectives for each student, the delivery of instruction, and the development and use of measurement instruments that determine if desired outcomes have been met. In essence, mastery learning permits a student to be taught and tested, and retaught and retested if they have not mastered a lesson in the first iteration.
