Amissville Cub Scouts and Webeloes participated in the Scouts Clean-Up Day last Saturday as proclaimed by the Governor. This group cleaned up the roadsides of Route 642 from Amissville to Viewtown. Cubmaster S.M. Martin Jr. directed the operation with other leaders including Mrs. Phyllis Hamilton, Donald James, K.M. Wharton, Mrs. Hamilton Coffey and Robert Hamilton. Boys taking part were Johnny Johnson, Alvin Grigsby, Harlon Coffey, Mike Fuel, Gregory Martin, Harvey Hamilton and Pat Story. Graham Hackley at Hackley’s Store in Amissville contributed 45 soft drinks for the youngsters and leaders. Jackie Estes of Washington, a part-time student at Piedmont Vocational School, won second place in the state electrical contest held Saturday in Richmond, after placing first in area competition. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Estes and was awarded a certificate of merit and a medallion which will be kept at the school.

If the school budget for next year is approved by the Board of Supervisors, Rappahannock will be offering a higher starting salary for teachers than any of the surrounding counties. However, the salary for the county’s most experienced teachers will continue to lag behind.
