On March'27^ Irpceiveda letter from a young man.'^nom I have njever met, but with whom I have corresponded on the telephone and through letters. His name is Jim Bywater, and he is an authority on the purple martin.
Although Bywater has been confmed to a wheelchair for many years, he is a careful observer and has accumulated a formidable amount of information on the martin, the largest of the swallows.
I will report Bywaters’ words in italics to separate them from my comments.
He wrote: *The first wave of purpie martins has arrived. It was April 20 last year when my martins arrived. The weather was a little harsher last year, if I remember correctly. But they arrived March 23 (5:25 p.m.) this year. I have three so far. Nearly 60 last year. ”
