I was a supporter and friend of Spring Mountain School from its beginning till its posing in May of 1996.
I carry no vote against Hearthstone needing more space to grow. I wish my friends success 1^1 their work. As an independent school, it is possible that Hearthstone may not always remain at the Castleton location. Being involved myself with a private school that has lust become independent of its sole donor, and well aware of the challenges of this responsibility, I wish Hearthstone the growth it deserves to become self-supporting in the future.
I have found part of Dietlinde Maazel’s letter in the Rappahannock News of April 5 to pve the wrong impression of Spring Mountain School’s troubles at that time and of the Maazel’s involvement with Spring Mountain. It was a long time ago and it is understandable that these events could be unclear to one not directly involved. Because of my involvement and commitment to Spring Mountain, I feel the need to express myself.
As a parent and part-time German teacher at the school, I do not know the details of the connection Spring Mountain made with the Maazels during the school year 1995-1996. Having heard that the family would be coming to join our school in the fall of 1996, there was the sense that this connection would benefit the school.
The spring term at the school was a jumble af financial panic and sad internal conflict, as well as slanderous attack. A few of the parents left the school mid term and their children aegan spending time with the Maazel children and their tutor in a playgroup. My family’s first risit to the farm was for the memorable \utumn Prelude concert, several years after Hearthstone had been established.
