These encounters leave Murphy, a big name action hero, dazed, confused and thinking he is being stalked by aliens.
Hijinks ensue, with a good comic ending. Naomi wishes Eddie Murphy didn’t always have roles requiring him to curse like a sailor, or maybe he just does that in real life.
• The Prince of Egypt: This 1998 one and a half hour video is an animated retelling of the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of bondage. The animation is lovely, and the tale is told without any moralizing or religious preaching.
Although ostensibly a family film, younger children may be disturbed by some of the images, particularly when Moses sends the various plagues onto the Egyptians (blood, flies, frogs, locust, death of the first born son, etc.). Also the dabbing of lamb’s blood on the Hebrew’s doors to protect them from the plagues is a difficult concept unless one is quite bible literate. The parting of the seas to allow the Israelites’ escape is quite dramatic.
Voices in the film include Michelle Pfeiffer, Val Kilmer, Danny Glover, Sandra Bullock and Leonard Nimoy. (Herb rated this video quite highly, but he is a real animation fan!).
• The Winslow Boy: This 1999 104 minute adaptation of a David Mamet play is long and tedious, although not without some merit. If you like hearing the English speak because of their delightful accent, you’ll love this film.
A privileged British boy in a private school is accused of a minor theft and expelled. His parents go to great lengths, ruining themselves financially, to clear him of the charges. In addition to financial ruin, the engagement of the boy’s sister is broken off by her wealthy fiancee because of the ensuing publicity about the case. In the end, the boy is cleared, but the family is changed forever.
Herb fell asleep during this one, which isn’t a real great show of support.
