After contacting federal authorities, Sherertz learned that the telephone call originated in Alberta, Canada, and that Canada was considered by authorities to be “the number one point of origin” of the world-wide lottery-tax scheme.
“Unfortunately, there is no way to charge anyone, but the federal authorities have made note of this case,” said Sherertz.
He also learned that other cases of the swindle had been reported in Virginia, including a man in Mechanicsville who had lost a large sum of money, and a resident of Prince William who was ready to send the perpetrators $11,000 before he was stopped by family members. “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” noted Sherertz.
Marijuana arrest
Kenneth W. Corbin, 18, was arrested early on the morning of April 8, after he was stopped by Dep. Anthony Berry after driving on Rt. 522 through Woodville “at twice the posted speed of 35 mph,” according to Sheriff Sherertz.
While interviewing Corbin after the traffic stop, Dep. Berry noticed evidence of drugs in the car. Corbin has been charged with possession of marijuana, in addition to the speeding offense.
DWI is charged
A Culpeper man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he was stopped just before midnight on April 8.
