On Tuesday, March 28 several members of
the School Board proposed a questionable and what has turned out to be controversial change to the 2000-2001 budget. The original potion, by Ms. Rebecca Cordani, was to limit administrators to a one step pay increase only. Phis would have constituted a two percent salary increase for these employees, all other ?TTiployees would receive a 6.75 percent increase.
This motion, which apparently had not been researched, was deemed punitive and not legally defensible by the superintendent. After a lengthy period of public discussion and whispering amongst themselves, these somewhat confused board members decided to put on bold the plan, put in place by the previous bpard, to move all employees, over a number p'f years, to their correct level, based on years af experience, on their respective pay plans. , This was the year four administrators ould have benefited from the plan. The reason given for this change was not clear. Repeated requests from concerned parents for a motive for this action went unanswered. ' So what were the results of this now controversial action? Administrators will receive a L5 percent increase in salary plus one step. She dollar amount was a $10,616 reduction
erall. This amount constitutes a reduction w the total budget of just slightly over 1/10 of ifce percent. In tax dollars it would amount to approximately 1/5 of a penny per $100 of Jgfsessed value or approximately $4 per year tn $200,000 of assessed value. (That’s just tour drinks at the Quicke Mart!) The effect on •he budget and the taxpayer was insignificant, if Only four employees were effected by this gjtion. Four well-qualified employees who Mve dedicated their lives to the field of education so that the children of Rappahannock puld have the best education possible. They Jill could be making more money in other professions. What is the monetary effect for them? * The range of reduction of potential earnings for just one year ranges from $3,934 to >725 or an average of 3.75 percent. These are not earth shaking amounts, but what about the effect on the morale of these individuals as a result of this action?
is enough, enough?
Hasn’t there been times you thought
enough was enough? Well, I think your paper has reminded us enough times of the trial dates of the Baldwins.
There has been enough people hurt, anough accusations made, enough talking ilone, but maybe not enough prayers for our fellow man.
