Erosion, Sediment course offered

Virginia’s Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is offering an Erosion and Sediment Control in Virginia course. This course was developed through the collaborative efforts of DCR’s Division of Soil and Water Conservation and the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The one-day course will cover the state minimum standards^ related engineering specifications and conservation practices on construction sites. Participants who complete the course and pass the examination at the end of the training will receive a certificate of completion. There is a $50 non-refundable registration fee, which includes a manual. There are six locations and dates to choose from Richmond, May 9; Fredericksburg, May 16; Charlottesville, May 25; Lynchburg, June 1; Williamsburg, June 15 and Manassas, July 12. Benefit breakfast planned

A benefit breakfast for Lauren Payne will be held on Saturday, May 13 from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Rappahannock County Elementary School. There will also be a silent auction. Tennis anyone?

Anyone with an interest in learning about tennis or dusting off and improving their skills might want to consider lessons from Rappahannock County resident Hunt Harris, who will be offering instruction this spring, summer and fall in group as well as individual formats. There will be a free opportunity to hit with Hunt to determine your level of play and get some quick pointers on Saturday morning, April 22 at the Rappahannock County Park from 9 to 11 a.m. After that, classes will begin forming according to skill levels and times available for instructor and instructees. • Sunday, April 16, Full Moon Hike. Destination: Old Rag. Details: This is an amazingly beautiful experience, though not for inexperienced hikers. Meet at the upper parking lot of Ofd Rag Mt. in Nethers at the end of Route. 600 off Route 231 (follow brown signs to Old Rag) between 6:30-7 p.m. Bring layered clothing and food / liquid for self. Return time uncertain owing to unknown number of participants and lunar mesmerizing influence. Contact Hunt for more information.

• Saturday, April 29, “Women’s Hike Series.” Destination: White Oak Canyon. Details: Meet at Mountainside Market in Sperryville between 8:30-9 a.m. or at parking lot off Route 600 by 9:30 a.m. Bring food and liquid for self and layered clothing.
