and moderate-sized azaleas
are easily moved during the growing season. Azaleas prefer soil pH in the range of 5.5 to 6.5, so soil aridity is nearly ideal throughout most of the mid-Atlantic region.
If well-watered, most evergreen azalea varieties are able to tolerate full sun, but perform far better when shaded from the hot afternoon sun. Planting on the east or north sides of the house at the edge of the woods, or under conifers, oak, dogwood, or other deep-rooted tree is ideal. When planting, dig a hole at least twice the size of the root ball. Add organic matter such as peat moss, pine bark or hardwood mulch, rotted leaves, or other decomposed material. Coarse sand can be added to improve drainage somewhat.
The pH of most recycled sewage products is too high for acid-loving azaleas. Mix these amendments uniformly with soil excavated from the hole. Remove the plastic container or burlap material and set the plant in the hole so the top of
