No one has attacked the merits of the Hearthstone School. The citizens of Castleton believe the proposed location is wrong, both for children and the community.
The Rappahannock Code places schools only on major collectors or higher for a reason. Schools generate traffic and development. Schools need to be placed in areas that provide adequate roads and other services to support them. Do the parents and supporters of the Hearthstone School wish to place one precious child’s life in jeopardy, by having that child travel at least twice a day over roads that are already treacherous and overtaxed?
Do the Maazels wish to increase the danger to their neighbors by increasing the burden of traffic on those roads? Do any of us want to spoil one of the few remaining rural areas in Northern Virginia by allowing haphazard development? Do we know the long term effect on the environment?
The Board of Supervisors have already ruled on other similar applications where road conditions were an issue in such a way as to indicate Rappahannock County is not open to such development. To allow one landowner an exception goes against our democratic principles. Once you open Pandora’s Box, we cannot close it.
