Salary shortfall?
In his report, Superintendent Gangel noted his anxiety about the level of teacher salary increases in the region. He said that he assumed that the 2.5 percent increase baseline that he incorporated into this year’s budget would help to bring Rappahannock teachers in line with Virginia averages, but that newspaper reports and a polling of school districts in the area indicate that other systems are increasing teacher salaries even more. Approved increases in Region 4 so far average 6.25 percent he said, and he fears that Rappahannock’s attempt to become competitive will not succeed. The school budget for Fiscal Year 2000-2001 has already been forwarded to the Board of Supervisors, and it is “out of our hands,” he said and “I’m fearful that we won’t catch up.”
Dr. Gangel also requested that the board approve a change order for the high school addition that would add back the classroom partitions removed for financial reasons earlier in the design process. “Since change orders are negative we now have the money,” he said. The addition of the partitions will cost $35,119 and can be funded through a combination of bond interest funds and savings on earlier change orders. The board unanimously approved his request.
