The effort by an out-oftown telemarketer to swindle a Rappahannock woman was thwarted when the potential victim became suspicious and contacted the Rappahannock Sheriff’s Office.
According to Sheriff Larry Sherertz, local law enforcement became involved when the Sperryville resident reported that she had been contacted earlier by a man claiming to be a representative of the “Canadian tax authority.”
The caller told the woman that she had won $160,000 in the Canadian lottery, but before she could claim the money she would have to prepay the taxes, amounting to 10 per cent of the prize, or $16,000.
He advised her that the money would have to be sent in the form of a cashier’s check, and that she “should not talk to a lawyer or anyone else” about the transaction.
Some of the claim seemed to make sense, since the woman often played the Canadian lottery.
But she had apprehensions, and before going to the bank and withdrawing the money, she called the Sheriff’s Office. Sherertz immediately suspected fraud.
“I told her to look at her lottery receipt, and call the telephone number for the official lottery office listed on it,” said Sherertz. “I also told her that in any event, taxes are taken out of the winnings before they are distributed,
