Thursday evening. My Grandad was here with me at the time, so he ran out and raised the poles. A martin landed on top of the house and rode up as Grandad raised the pole. The three martins flew right in at 5:25 p.m.”
Bywaters’ home is a few miles north of Flint Hill. I telephoned him this morning for more information. He reported that the martins swooping and diving around his house now are all males. “Females will arrive later,” he said.
The martin is slightly bigger than 7 inches long. Males are blueblack all over; females have grayish throats and bellies. These graceful birds ride the air in circles, alternating quick flaps and glides.
Their calls are rich and throaty, with the song a gurgling sound. One of the most assuring sounds in all nature is to wake in the morning to the martin’s cheerful calls.
