Culpeper to their site and found it took only 2 1/2 days. A six-mule team had been taking two weeks to do the same amount of work. The tannery bought a truck and sold its sixmule team.
Oddly, there were still dreams of having an in-county railway system running to Culpeper and then onward to the port at Fredericksburg. Eugene Scheel in his book about Culpeper notes some of these “railways in name only.” In 1898, the Virginia General Assembly chartered the Fredericksburg and Rappahannock Railroad, one part of which included an electrified line from Culpeper to Sperryville. It never came into being.
In 1910, P. Henry O’Bannon of Sperryville, proposed a streetcar line to Culpeper. No results. In 1912, Virginia chartered the Culpeper, Madison, and Rappahannock Railroad, and part was to run from Washington. Va.. to
