The final performance in this season’s “Smithsonian at Little Washington” concert series will take place at the Theatre at Washington, on May 12 at 8 p.m., when harpsichordist Kenneth Slowik will be joined by violist Steven Dann to play the complete sonatas for viola (da gamba) and harpsichord by Johann Sebastian Bach. The “Brilliance of the Baroque” concerts, of which this is one, are perennial favorites at the Theatre.
Steven Dann, a native of Canada, began his music studies as a violinist and switched to the viola in his late teens. Early in his career he was named Principal Viola of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, a position he also has held with the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich, the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, the Vancouver Symphony, and the Toronto Symphony, where he is today.
As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras throughout Canada and Europe. As a chamber musician, he is currently a member of the Axelrod String Quartet, and has been a member of the Glinka and Supernova quartets. His tours have taken him around the world.
