My first memory of May Day-Health Day was when I first started school in Rappahannock in 1939. It had been in existence years before this.
It was created to draw attention to the importance of health and to provide an incentive for children to get their teeth taken care of and become a five pointer. This was a requirement for physical fitness.
To be a five pointer you had to meet the requirements for the five points of the star which represented vision, hearing, teeth, throat, and weight. If you failed any of these you were given an X on your report card.
Once these were corrected, the date of correction was written in and this entitled you to the Five Point Certificate.
This was much like a diploma, signed by the Division Superintendent and was from the Commonwealth of Virginia, State Board of Education and Health. It also had the gold Virginia State Seal.
A gold star indicated high five standards with immunization against smallpox and diphtheria. If you were a five pointer this entitled you to participate in the May DayHealth Day activities. This encouraged each student to become a five pointer so they could enjoy and participate in the Commencement Day activities.
