Over 20 species of birds rely on just a handful of woodpecker species to excavate a cavity for their home. The woodpeckers only use the cavity once leaving it available for birds such as the Tree Swallow and Eastern Bluebird. A good cavity in a tree can be used for many years by many species of birds.
We have placed several small gourds in our yard the last couple of years and there are Tree Swallows nesting in them. We have grown gourds at our home in past years to use as Purple Martin houses, gourds that are too small for that purpose make excellent houses for smaller birds. One pair of Tree Swallows, nesting for their second year, is in a gourd placed just under the eaves of our carport. The swallows pay no attention to us and go about their daily routine. I think they enjoy watching us as much as we do them.
