interesting traits. After staking a claim on a nest box, gourd or natural cavity both the male and female will construct a cup nest of dried grass.

Both the male and female will travel great distances to find feathers dropped bv other birds. The Tree Swallow collects and uses these feathers to line the inner cup of their nest. Most nests have two to four feathers but some swallows use up to ten feathers.

Tree Swallows are one of the few species of bird that I have seen engaging in playing behavior. This activity seems to be a fairly common occurrence. I have witnessed this behavior many times while observing the Tree Swallows that nest in our yard. They will fiy high in the sky to drop a newly found feather and chase the feather as it floats back to earth. They do this over and over just for the fun of it. Many times they catch it in mid-air only to climb higher and start all over again.

Tree Swallows feed exclusively on insects. The best part is, they are usually the insects that make life outdoors difficult for you and me. The swallows swoop across open fields catching their dinner while in flight. They eat hundreds of insects daily, the more swallows the fewer the insects.
