The migrants would want to trade something for gas. We had to do business with them or they would be living with us.

I think we ended up having one of every type musical instrument known. Violin, trombone, xylophone, concertina, accordion, comet, etc; you name it!

My father bought a nickel slot machine. The first man to play it hit the jack-pot and that night someone broke in and stole the slot machine. The grande finale was a driver that swerved over, hit the pump and destroyed the air compressor.

The service station was a good idea but not during a Depression.

There were people who walked across the country. They always needed water and food. In the evening they needed somewhere to sleep.

Usually my mother would feed them and they usually slept in a haystack. When it was very cold they would come in the house and sleep by the stove.

I remember one night waking up because a stranger was sleeping on my feet. These people were poor, without food or shelter.
