Scam artists posing as representatives of the Virginia State Police are at work again in Rappahannock County, resulting in complaints received by the Sheriffs Office.
It was reported that three calls had been received by residents — one in Washington and two in the Amissville area — that persons claiming to represent the State Police had solicited donations for “Buddy Bears” or “Bears for Injured and Sick Children.”
In one case, the caller did not identify himself, but the person who received the call had a “Caller ID” on her telephone that indicated that the call originated in Georgia.
In another case which occurred on Nov. 25, the person who answered the call declined to make a donation to “Buddy Bears” over the telephone, and asked for information to be mailed.
Surprisingly, the caller said he would send the information. But in the other instances, the callers hung up when queried about their “causes.”
It was reported earlier this year that one brazen solicitor asked a prospective donor to provide him with her checking account number in order to process the donation.
