There are different traditions for different families. Some don’t put their Christmas tree up until Christmas Eve, some collect old tree ornaments. Certain movies are watched. Our favorite movie is “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
One of our friends collect Christmas ornaments from their vacations and weekend trips. They remember the fim trips as they decorate their tree.
Our memories flash back to our youth regardless of how old we get.
There are certain aromas that linger in our memory. Every Christmas Eve my mother would bake this cake that smelled of spices and raisins. I’ve tried to make one like it, but it never tastes the same.
As we received our Christmas cards, they were always taped around the door, and each night we played a memory game to see who could remember who sent which card. The one remembering the most, won the game.
Now, remember this was before television, and we entertained ourselves.
Our Christmas tree was a cedar tree because they were available and had a wonderful aroma. You just knew where the right one was growing, and you did not put it up early. We still add cedar to our greenery.
As our family chooses a Christmas tree now from a tree farm, the song “O Christmas Tree” is sung over and over. We only sing these three words and it has become our tree theme.
