It was a great opening week for winter sports. Boys’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, and wrestling all kicked off their seasons with non-Bull Run District competition.
The high school gym “facelift project” continued with the unveiling of the track and field athletic records and pictures of former champions. The Alumni Night crowd brought together many old friends and athletes from teams of the past.
Boys’ Basketball
The Varsity boys opened against the Luray High School Bulldogs on Friday Dec. 7. It was a packed house with many former athletes there for Alumni Night and the excitement that always begins with a new season.
The RCHS Panthers would be no match for the visiting Luray squad who jumped out to a 7-0 first quarter lead. The Rapp side never threatened the entire half and went into the break down 33-12. Although the Panthers played better the second half and never gave up, they were never really in the game. They lost by the final score of 62-37.
Junior Kerry Grigsby led RCHS scorers with 14 points.
The JV game, played prior to the start of the varsity contest, was a very exciting win of 45-40. The keys to the Junior Varsity win over Luray Tuesday night were defense and the ability to adjust throughout the game. At this early juncture during the seasoi), it was impressive to see the players adapt so quickly to whatever the Bulldogs tried to execute.
The Rapp JV’s physical conditioning allowed them to pr^ss half-court with a trapping defense for a large portion of the game. This constant pressure forced the JV Bulldogs from Luray into some very key turnovers for Rappahannock. The game seesawed back and forth the first half, but half-time adjustments and the desire of the players allowed them to open the season with a victory.
“There is still work to be done in fine-tuning the offense and continuing to improve as a team on and off the court. Regardless, a home opening victory is just what the doctor ordered,” said Coach Gary Settle.
