The proposed County
Lighting Ordinance has provoked considerable debate in the Rapphannock News. A Sept. 12 letter by Vivian Yancey objected to any ordinance on the grounds that it took away her “freedom of choice” even though not a word in the proposed changes applies to her as an individual homeowner, and none of the proposals even remotely discuss taking away anyone’s existing outdoor lighting.
Since her particular worry seems to be security, it was funny she told the world that she lived alone.
She must have missed the Nov. 17, 1999 RN article that mentioned that shields that deflect lateral light pollution downward do in fact exist. They are also mentioned in the proposed ordinances. She should also know that the County already has ordinances against excessive glare on the books.
