I cannot remember much except that next door was a tobacco shop and I got my dad a five cent cigar. He loved cigars.
Imagine the feeling of pride to be able to buy my mother a present! We bought each other presents too. In those days a quarter went a long way.
I hope the above story may have softened some readers up with feelings for the poor children who have never had money to spend for Christmas.
Captain Jeff Brown with the Rappahannock Sheriff’s Office and our School Resource Officer has a program called “Shop with a Deputy”. He needs all the monetary help he can get at Christmas time to give poor children money and take them shopping. I have contributed more than I can afford because I remember being poor and the joy and pride of being able to buy a present for the people I loved.
If you give to this program you can almost feel the joy of Christmas you have created in these deprived children. There are many charities that are worthy especially those for education such as Head Start but the Sheriff’s program is one the kids can get their hands on, it’s real, it’s called instant gratification.
