the 100, 200, and 400 meter dashes during the 70’s. Former and current girls’ Varsity Head Coach, Ms. Ann Spieker, was also recognized for over 14 years of coaching in the program.
On the other end of the gym, on the Wall of Champions, the Athletic Director unveiled a team photograph of the 1972 RCHS Cross Country State Champions. Former cross country stalwart, Charlie Thomas, who Smythe referred to as “the heart and soul of those early champions” was on hand and stood up to be recognized along with the coach of those great teams, Mr. John Toth, also in attendance.
It was the final piece of interior decorating to our gym which the AD describes as the “prettiest gym in Virginia” and was a fitting tribute to the alumni who attended Fridays’ games.
