As Americans we needed to support the war. A popular phrase during the war was, “use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.”
The soldiers’ needs came before those at home, so by rationing and recycling our soldiers would have essential supplies.
Tires and other items made of rubber were the first to be rationed. Coffee and sugar soon became scarce. Many people learned to drink “postum”, which was made with chicory in place of coffee.
The “Office of Price Control” was created to set limits and institute a system of coupons for various items. Each American was given a set number of ration coupons.
The blue coupons were used to buy canned vegetar bles, fruits, jellies and catsup.
The red coupons were to buy meat, butter, cheese and other fats.
To purchase an item, the customer had to have the correct number of coupons
