Trainer’s daughter Blythe Miller will ride both horses; she was also Lonesome Glory’s rider in his *92 Cheltenham hurdle victory and in two other steeplechase wins in England in 1997. She is currently based at Gulfstream Park in Florida and is riding at flat tracks weights (about 115, with tack) so Blythe Miller can make any light assignment given to Solo Lord in the ’chase handicap.

The plans

Though plans were not final at press time, Bruce Miller said he hopes to ship Solo Lord and Pelagos by van to an airport in Canada for the international flight to Heathrow on the Friday prior to the races, March 9. There, they will undergo a short quarantine period and than board a cargo plane for the seven-hour overnight flight to England.

The horses will be met by a van at the airport and will be shipped directly to the Cheltenham racecourse, about 90 miles from London. Though the course will be a beehive of activity in preparation for the Festival, there is plenty of green space, Miller said, for long walks and hand-grazing, so the horses can relax and unwind from the trip.

“They might jog on Monday, but neither one will get much work (once in England) before they race,” Miller said.
