All Gong invited
to Japanese ’chase

Hoping to make international waves for the sport of American steeplechasing, 2000 National Steeplechase Association champion hurdler All Gong will receive the first American invitation to compete in the $1.25 million Nakayama Grand Jump April 13 in Ibkyo, Japan.
The world’s richest steeplechase annually invites hearses from the U.S., England, Ireland, France, Australia and New Zealand to take on the best from Japan.
The race has been won by a horse from the host country in each of its first two runnings. The 2 1/2mile event is run over a variety of fences (generally higher and softer than the standardized U.S. “national fence” hurdles.)
Ninepins represented the U.S. and Pennsylvania trainer Jonathan Sheppard’s stable in the 2000 running, finishing ninth. Last year, Campanile, trained by Pennsylvania’s Janet Elliot, was fifth in the race.
