When Sovereign Storm came to his stable 18 months ago, Yovanovich said that the horse arrived with a reputation for being difficult and hard to ride. Yovanovich said he gave the chestnut gelding eight months off from racing, trying different training methods and finding the key to the horse’s happiness.
“Turns out he just hated training on the racetrack,” Yovanovich said. “He was fine to work on the farm (on turf gallops). He came out last spring and, boom, won four races with four different riders. Every one of them said he was honest and hard-tiying and that they’d love to ride him again.
“Its not a case of ‘training’ the horse to do anything,” he added. “You are the conditioner, and just have to find how the horse will best respond.”
