sprout, inis win save you the time and frustration of having expended lots of effort only to sow duds! ! Space is probably the foremost concern for any home-nursery set-up, unless you are flush with greenhouses, cold frames and dozens of lights. To create a [minimal nursery space with a 48” light fixture, the small'est effective size, you’ll need a 4 1/2’ x 2 1/2’ area. It’s good ■to put this where you won’t -forget to pay attention and where you don’t mind a little mess, if soil or water should spill, especially when cats are about!
Seeds can be started in four inch pots, sowing whatever portion of a packet will fit in little rows inside the pot’s parameters. (Just envision sowing a miniature row garden in the pot, to get the concept.) When the second set of true leaves appear, (the first set , khown as cotyledons are,“false” leaves) the seedlings should be potted on to a larger flat, or individual cells or pots, depending upon the plant.
Check instructions for soil covering of each seed type. Some need very little, some none, most need of soil on top. Potted on plants need a slightly richer soil mix then one used for germi'nation. Buy a good quality one, or add four to five cups each of worm castings and compost to the recipe in Part One of this article.
Individual cell-packs placed in standard, rigid flats are good for sowing large quantities of a plant or several varieties of the same plant. The small pot method, as well as being a “professional” method, is a good choice if you want to start many different types of plants, since they will germinate at different rates, be different sizes and have different needs for proximity of light.
