Richard Palmer Abell. 79. of Woodville died on Sunday. Feb. 10 at Culpeper Regional Hospital.
After teaching for 36 years, he retired to Rappahannock County in 19S4 and. along with his wife. Joyce, operated a 20-acre, organically-oriented. fruit and vegetable commercial farm. When it came into season each spring. Mr. Abell's asparagus was a highly sought-after delicacy coveted by local restaurants, stores and individual customers.
The Abells also provided their customers with lettuce and raspberries for many years.
Though Mr. Abell had been in a wheelchair since early manhood after contracting polio, he never let that fact stop him from farming. He used a tractor with hand controls plus a three-wheeled vehicle to get around his farm.
His undergraduate major at the University of New Hampshire had been in horticulture and he felt he was returning to his first love.
Mr. Abell served as Vice President of the Virginia Association for Biological Farming ( VABF i and as chairman of the VABF Organic Certification Committee in the early 90’s. He also greatly enjoyed the many people he met as a Thursday volunteer at our library.
Mr. Abell was a member of the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection (RLEPi and the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC).
