Solo Lord’s U.S. success last year encouraged the Hoffmans to look towards the Cheltenham Festival: With Michael Hoffman up, the bay 10-year-old won America’s most prestigious timber race, the Maryland Hunt Cup last April.
There is historic precedent for Hunt Cup champs racing, and winning, in England: American-owned timber stars Jay Trump and Ben Nevis both went on to win the famed English Grand National alter their U.S. victories. Both these horses were sent to England to train for the season, however, and were considered “British trained” at the time of their National scores.
Solo Lord’s American success, in point-to-points and in the 4-mile Hunt Cup, has all come over timber. Stamina and jumping ability are the bay gelding’s strong suits, both requisite for the 3 l/16th-mile William Hill Chase and the steep uphill homestretch run and testing conditions at the Cheltenham course.
