Gardener’s Supply, Cook’s Garden, Shepard’s Seeds and many other firms offer capillary mat propagation systems, which include different sized cell trays, a water reservoir and humidity domes. With some of these and a timer, to give seedlings the 14-16 hours they need, you could be in business. It is essential though for someone to be present after seeds are sown until they break soil, to remove the humidity domes.
And, periodically, someone will need to replenish the water reserve and adjust the lights. Note: don’t be tempted to leave grow lights on all the time. Plants need their rest, too and must have a dark period each day to stimulate their photosynthesis processes.
Humidity domes or plastic bags are a helpful accessory in aiding germination, and I recommend their use. As soon as green sprouts appear, the domes and bags should come off and the seedlings be kept very close, without touching, to the lights, not more than three inches away until they are more developed or ready to move outside.
After seeds are sown and until they germinate, the soil surface must be kept moist, easily achieved with a small hand-held sprayer. I water
