Hunter Pacing
Long a popular part of the circuit, a hunter pace is held by most of Virginia’s hunt clubs in conjunction with their steeplechase. It’s usually held the following day, sometimes at the same spot, but always over the hunt’s home country. Pairs of riders are timed as they travel cross country over a preset course of two to four miles.
There are divisions for hilltoppers, with optional jumping, and over fences for juniors and adults. For the daredevils, there is a fast-time division, but most riders compete in optimum time.
Old-Fashioned
For the daring foxhunter with a good jumping horse that perhaps lacks the speed to compete at the regular point-to-points, three hunts offer old-fashioned races which form the Ruhsam Challenge Series.
An old-fashioned is similar to the earliest steeplechases, where foxhunters took their own line racing across country using a landmark such as a church steeple as the finish line.
