A CALL TO REST
Along with flag presentation and folding, veterans are entitled to hear Taps as part of the funeral honors ceremony. Up until the Civil War, the easily recognizable call at day's end, which was borrowed from the French, was called Lights Out. In the aftermath of the Seven Days battle. Union General Daniel Adams requested a less formal rendition of the call from his brigade bugler to honor his men. What emerged was a simple and eloquent call that was gradually taken up through the Army of the Potomac. This more power and emotive Taps was soon adopted throughout the military, officially recognized by the Army in 1X74. It became the standard at military funeral ceremonies in 1X91.
