As the first action at their May meeting, the Board of Supervisors trimmed the School Board's proposed budget of $8,954,676 by $176,232. Before acting on the motion by Hampton District representative Bryant Lee to make the cut to the bottom line, School Superintendent Dr. David Gangel was subjected to intensive questioning on budget specifics including the cost of schools administration, the cost-benefit of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, and the omission of a third (past expenditures) column from the budget's detailed expenditures section.
Mr. Lee was joined by Stonewall-Hawthorne's Bob Anderson and Wakefield’s Roger Welch in questions pertaining to the value of the IB program for all students and in light of high school mathematics and social studies Standards of Learning test result deficiencies.
Dr. Gangel's responses characterized the IB program as available and beneficial to all students, and a program that would raise academic standards throughout the school system.
