Since Three Roses premiered here in Rappahannock County, not only have audiences all over the country been deeply affected by the women's stories, but the play itself has also undergone a transformation. “In fact." says local writer and performer Joyce Abell, “if you saw the premier, you haven’t seen this play. Those who were fortunate enough to see Three Roses in its infancy, now have the rare opportunity to come see how the work has grown and changed."
In describing the change, Julie says that as she performed the play and felt the response of audiences, her own insight into her characters' experience developed, inevitably changing her characters' insight, and altering the focus of the entire work in a fundamental way.
Julie sees a direct relationship between her work as a playwright and an actress and what she teaches in the Life Stories workshops she offers. “It's about w hat happens when one is able to share a story and when one truly listens to another’s story. Both the teller and the listener are changed by the experience."
