The open invitation to area artists to submit works for a juried show of Virginia Landscapes at the Middle Street Gallery drew responses from at least 35 amateur and professional workers. Several fine entries are photographs, one is a ceramic work, and others are examples of various graphic media.
A few are largely abstract, but even those, with one exception, are recognizable scenes.
One especially lucid water cr r and pastel picture is r. email one by Lois Manookian titled "Red Oak Winter”.
In the foreground an arching red shrub grows before bare tree trunks casting shadows beside a path or road. There is abundant life in this work of perfectly handled paint and pencil.
Emily Kenner's “Very Early Spring" is a mixed media of oil and pastel. A blue and green foreground sets off a bright pink flowering orchard backed by blue, orange and lavender mountains and a blue sky. Kenner's work verges on the abstract but in this case a
