tion with its partners decided to add a social worker to the school system. With an office at the Elementary school as well as at DSS, Beverly Frazier, the new family support worker, was on the job Aug. 8. She will be receiving referrals from guidance counselors and teachers at both schools and then will be working with families who may benefit from this program.
Her job is to assess the strengths in the “at risk” family and create a plan to shore up the situation so it doesn’t deteriorate. According to both Ms. Leathers and Ms. Frazier, this program and her position is “ totally family friendly” and totally voluntary on the part of a family.
The goal is to identify and prevent a family from “coming into care,” to intervene and assist the family in finding alternatives to foster care.
